It's mid-afternoon, and you've been at your computer all day. You're getting tired and cranky, so clearly it's time for a nice cuppa and a little something to nibble. But you know what would really brighten your day? Putting that snack on a handmade mug rug! Mug rugs, for the uninitiated, are like super-sized coasters - just big enough to hold your beverage and a nice cookie or two. (Or three!) And this mug rug is extra special (and fun to make) because of its intricate patchwork. If the idea of matching up all these points worries you, fear not. This pattern is made with English paper piecing (also known as EPP), a technique that makes precision effortless. And it's hand-sewn, so you don't even need a sewing machine. This pattern teaches you how to work with diamond, triangle, and half-circle shapes, and is a nice new challenge if you've only tried EPP with hexagons. If you're a complete beginner to EPP, don't worry - it's very easy to learn, and highly addictive! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Thread a needle

Recommended with this pattern

  • 9" x 12" piece of wool or acrylic felt
  • Coordinating thread for sewing
  • 8" x 8" piece of low-loft cotton batting
