The Canadian Flag has had a maple leaf as its emblem since the 19th century whilst quilters have been using the maple leaf to add interest to bed quilts for just as long. This pattern celebrates both these elements to create a mug rug that will look good on any table or desk. This Patchsmith pattern is suitable for beginner and experienced quilters alike with its easy patchwork and quick-fuse applique. Suited to both hand and machine sewing, this pattern comes with easy-to-follow instructions, colour diagrams and full-size applique templates - all you have to do is choose your fabrics You have the option of creating two different versions of sidebar for this mug rug, both of which can be constructed from scraps of fabric. Shown here is a Canadian Flag red-and-white version together with a golden embossed Maple Leaf design. But you don't have to stick to these colours - autumn tones or spring greens would look just as good. Why not try both versions in different colours - you will then have a mug rug to keep for yourself and one to gift to a friend or relative? This pattern is for personal use but permission is also granted to make this item to sell provided the item is handmade by you and you credit the Patchsmith for the design. I am the Patchsmith. I patch, applique, sew and quilt. I have been creating a life of fabric, fun and friends for many, many years. I believe a pattern should be easy to follow, with clear diagrams and full-size templates. Value is also very important to me - both in terms of fabric wastage and to the buyer. Patchwork is about sharing and that is why all my patterns are priced for everybody to afford. To contact me visit my blog ( and click on 'About the Patchsmith' or email me at
