|Here are some details about my project:|
What was your source for this piece?
Tell us a little more about your inspiration. from my photos of family pets
Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. I painted this portrait of Josie, our family dog, by referencing an old photo I took of her. She was a majestic and stoic presence in our lives so I chose to use a deep scarlet background to highlight her beautiful color. I used one brush, as I often do, to grind the paint into the canvas. I find a short hard bristol is best for my technique. I usually layer my colors to push and pull the subject then add value by using one color added to the base colors of the form.
What are you most proud of? I am most proud of capturing her essence in the richness of color and her position. She was glorious.
What advice would you give someone starting this project? I think that when using a photo as reference, one should be prepared to improvise. I do not expect to paint everything true in the photograph so I try to capture the main subject and blur the rest. I did so in this piece by omitting the landscape in the photo and placing a semi solid color background.
