Loved gardening but now too old to do it myself. Relying on support from non-gardening family .!
I love hostas too but between the deer and slugs, I am digging all of them up. I've put some behind a deer fence but we can't really enjoy their beauty. We've done it all to deter the deer and slugs but I'm open to any suggestions! Thank you!
Pecans, for deer, I use inexpensive plastic fence. About $20 for 100' x 6'. I simply velcro it to 8' bamboo poles and it is invisible to the human eye. You can also use it as a floating row cover to break deer habits. For slugs, the easiest is granular products like Sluggo, $2 lb in bulk. I also put thick pieces of water soaked newspapers here and there to attract them. Wet the ground first. Every AM I simply put a single plastic glove on and lift the paper to hand pick them. This is VERY effective but the real reason I bother doing this is to feed my pond fish, they love them. Beer traps also work, fish love them even more! lol
I love the photo of your butterfly fountain and garden. That is really lovely! You have quite a green thumb. Thanks for the good tips on slug removal...though most of our hostas are surrounded by rough cut rocks, so slugs have not been much of a problem on those.
