Beth, which is the proper way for the cake to be stacked to ice? inverted or as if you lifted it out of the pans?

The bottom cake goes onto the cake plate with the bottom of the cake down, and the top facing up. Unless your cake bakes completely flat, the top will be cut and crumbly. The second layer goes on the opposite way. The top, cut and crumbly side goes down and the bottom is at the top. That way you have a smooth, clean surface to ice.

I have a 7" square mold and a box of classic yellow cake mix. How much of this mix should I use? I don't find any reference on the box or anywhere else. this will be my first try at baking, please help.
