I think you have a very interesting idea here and the strongly horizontal crop is effective. A challenge you face with this set of colors and the light is that things tend to blend together for the viewer. You bring your memory of the scene and taking the picture to the shot, but a viewer does not. If you shot this with even less depth of field (don't be afraid to shoot wide open), you would be able to better structure the photo for the viewer so he/she would be able to better see what is important.
