Winter Dreamin': The Ultimate Winter Knitting Project Wish List

With last year’s holidays now a distant memory, the new year in full swing and winter here to stay for a few more weeks, it’s winter wish list time!

You worked hard in November and December, and diligently knitted toasty gifts for Uncle Lucas, Cousin Chloe, and Baby Talullah, and now it’s high time to treat yourself and your knitting needles to something ultra-special.

Treat yourself with Craftsy’s wish list for winter knitting!

#1: A wondrous fiber-filled getaway

Sheep flock on the West Coast of Ireland

Perhaps at very top of your list is a little sheep flock and farmstead? Not only would you have access to beautiful wool that you watched grow (quite literally!) but you could stage your own sheep-to-shawl event. And think of all the photo ops!

On a more serious note, you could be a major player in the modern farm movement. For more information and inspiration on small-scale fiber farming, visit Fibershed, your regional sheep & wool growers association, or an upcoming sheep & wool festival.

#2: The coziest yarn

If your wish list is a little more modest, and your 2015 resolutions don’t involve a lifestyle change from a city dweller to a shepherdess, I suggest the following bounty of lovely yarns, handy knitting kits and inventive patterns to delight your senses this season.

Rowan Mohair Yarn

Add Rowan Kidsilk Haze Yarn to your wish list and do a little alchemy on your next project – using one strand of “Liqueur” and one strand of “Blustery” will yield a color close to Marsala, Pantone’s pick for Color of the Year 2015.

Rowan Truesilk Yarn

#3: The loveliest yarn

And if mohair doesn’t tickle your fancy just so, go for Rowan Truesilk Yarn – the 100% Mulberry Silk is lustrous, soft, and quite decadent. And the soft color palette will make for excellent spring- and summer-time knitting.

#4: Yarn with some texture!

Another wish-list-worthy yarn is a Bluprint Exclusive ArtYarns Beaded Silk and Alpaca Yarn. Its unusual textures and sophisticated colorways make for major tactile- and eye-candy.

Clover Takumi Bamboo 24in Circular Knitting Needles

#5: Essential items

Not every item on your Winter Wish list must be whimsical and extravagant. A couple of pairs of new Clover Takumi Bamboo Needles have a rightful place on your list. Bamboo needles are my personal favorite, and the 24” length is very versatile.

Often, I use these circular needles instead of single-points even when working on projects that aren’t knit in the round. If you do a LOT of knitting, you will want to replace your bamboo needles every few years as the tips can dull , but only with very heavy use.

Knit Afghan

Tree of Life Afghan Kit

#6: The perfect blanket

You can also let your wish list item do double-duty. Use the very striking Tree of Life Afghan Kit to work up an heirloom object that keeps you warm while you knit away at it on all those frigid February and March days.

Estonian Lace Explained

#7: An online class on luxurious lace

Long winter nights are also perfect for mastering a new skill and boosting your knitting technique arsenal. Estonian Lace Explained, one of the newest online knitting classes from Bluprint, is a great choice.

Daffodils Knit Mittens

#8: The warmest mittens

And, because when we are half-way through winter, spring is just over the horizon, the Daffodils Mittens pattern is a fitting way to complete this Winter Wish List.
