Keep an eye out for these cake trends in 2017 weddings
1. Modern botanicals
These modern floral cakes are heavy on the sugar flowers, but sleek and plain otherwise. The design above features a crown of large sugar flowers (peonies, roses, Brunia berries, ranunculus, eucalyptus and silver ferns) as the main focus, and the cake itself remains simple in look and color.
The great thing about plain tiers is that you can play with more unique floral arrangements without worrying about other design elements. You could wrap sugar flowers around each tier or create a large wreath out of blossoms. Another great idea involves filling polystyrene tier separators with your gorgeous sugar flowers.
2. Gold drip
Decadent gold drips are so popular right now! Drip cakes have been popular for a while, but now, they’re going gold. Drips feel casual so they pair well with carefree florals, macarons and meringues. For the cake above, we kept it simple with gold and pale green macarons teamed up with fresh roses.
3. Rustic glamour
Naked cakes and semi-naked cakes are still one of the most requested wedding cakes for us. They’re perfect for countryside weddings. These days, semi-naked cakes are more refined in decoration with glamorous details like large roses, gold leaf, macarons and on-trend personalized toppers.
One tip to master this trend is keeping it simple. Try keeping any decorative elements to a minimum and also concentrated on one part of the cake.
4. Think pink
Pink has gone from being one of our least-requested colors for wedding designs to our most-requested hue! Lighter pink tones such as blush and ice pink are popular when paired with more glamorous gold, copper and rose gold details. For early 2017, we think blush will still be a great choice, but keep a look out for even more sophisticated shades of pink appearing.
5. Fashion forward
Finally, various fashion elements make the perfect inspiration for wedding cake designs. Metallic edible sequins grew popular over the past few years, and now we’re seeing them paired with brush embroidery royal icing, edible lace–covered tiers and even sugar beading work.
Gather ideas from the catwalk to keep your cakes fashion forward. Give lace work an extra dimension with beading dotted throughout using sugar pearls and metallic dragées.
