5 Sewing Experts You Should Know

When learning how to sew, it’s worth it to learn from the sewing experts. From design elements to time-saving construction tips, there’s a lot to learn from sewists who have been there, done that.

Here are five sewing experts you might be interested in learning more from. (Some of them are also Craftsy instructors!)

Susan Khalje:

Susan is a couturier and author. She hosted Sew Much More on HGTV for six years, and has contributed to major sewing publications in addition to writing Linen and Cotton: Classic Sewing Techniques for Great Results and Bridal Couture: Fine Sewing Techniques for Wedding Gowns and Evening Wear. On Craftsy, she teaches The Couture Dress. Susan also does blog features useful tips, and helpful video tutorials are featured on her YouTube channel. On Craftsy, Angela teaches Tailoring Ready-to-Wear and Creative Serging: Beyond the Basics.

Nancy Zieman:

Nancy has been sharing sewing tips and how-tos with sewists since 1982. Sewing with Nancy currently airs on PBS, but you can also watch her YouTube videos or watch past episodes of her show online. There’s even an app if you want to watch on your mobile device. Nancy also designs sewing patterns. I love that her patterns feature time-saving tips to help you finish a project quickly.

Kenneth D. King:

Kenneth operates a small haute-couture house specializing in made-to-measure evening wear and one-of-a-kind accessories. His Web site features a gallery of couture clothing items he has created. They are truly works of art! Kenneth has written a number of books, covering everything from the basic sleeve to handbag construction, to help other sewists master couture-sewing techniques. Sandra Betzina:

Sandra, who formerly hosted Sew Perfect on HGTV, now runs an extensive Web site called Power Sewing. Sandra has more than 100 video sewing lessons available. They’re appropriate for both beginning and advanced sewists, and topics covered range from creating perfect pleats to lining a jacket. Her Web site also includes a blog and a map of fabric stores around the world. On Craftsy, Sandra teaches Pant Fitting Techniques, Pant Construction Techniques, and Sewing on the Bias.
