Learn How to Stitch a Beginner-Friendly Ohio Star Block

One of the classic quilt blocks and an element of many sampler quilts and even some star quilt patterns, the Ohio Star block is easy to sew as long as you can make an hourglass unit and join simple squares.

The Ohio Star quilt block is sewn on a 3 x 3 grid, featuring three rows and three columns. It is made from five patchwork squares and four hourglass blocks.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to sew an Ohio Star block that’s 12″ finished (12 1/2″ unfinished), which is the perfect size for bee blocks and sampler quilts!

Fabric:

From grey background fabric:

  • Cut 4 squares 4 1/2″ each
  • Cut 2 squares 5-1/4″ each

From pink star fabric (pictured is Luckie from Blend Fabrics)

  • Cut 1 square 4 1/2″ each
  • Cut 2 squares 5-1/4″ each

1. Set aside the 4 1/2″ squares for now. Pick up one 5 – 1/4″ square of each color, and pin them right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to another in pencil. Stitch 1/4″ to the right and left of this line.

2. Cut down the center line to make two half-square triangles.

3. Here are your half-square triangles opened. Press the seams open and then toward the grey/darker side.

4. Pin the half square triangles on top of each other so that the center seams line up. Each color should be on top of the opposite color in the other block. (The pink should be on top of grey, and the grey should be on top of pink.) The seams will be nested inside each other.

Like you did earlier, draw a diagonal line from one corner to another in pencil. Stitch 1/4″ to the right and left of this line. Cut along the line.

Trim the blocks to 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square

6. Trim the blocks to 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ square. Repeat steps 1-5 with your other large squares to make another pair of hourglass blocks.

Lay out the blocks with 4" blocks in the center and corners

7. Lay out the blocks as pictured, with the 4 1/2″ blocks in the center and corners.

Stitch together the blocks in each row

8. Stitch together the blocks in each row, and press the seams away from the hourglass blocks. Join the rows and press the seams open.

Completed Ohio Star block

It’s that easy to make an Ohio Star block! To make the block in a different size, you will want to take your finished block size, divide it by 3. (In this pattern, 12 / 3 = 4.)

To get the smaller square size, add 1/2″ to that number. (4 + 1/2 = 4-1/2″)

To get the larger square size, add 1-1/4″ to that number. (4 + 1-1/4 = 5-1/4″)
