How to Make Your Own Birthday Cards

Hi there! My name is Lexy and I write the do-it-yourself and entertaining blog, The Proper Pinwheel! So as you can likely tell, I love to create and eat. I currently spend all my time and energy convincing others that they can DIY all aspects of a party! I’m so thrilled to be sharing a fun and simple step by step tutorial with you fine folks at Craftsy today.

Make Your Own Birthday Cards

I absolutely love giving and receiving cards. Birthdays, Christmas, Thank You- I love them all. There are so many unique ways to create a card. As fun as it is to buy a card, it can be equally or more exciting to make one yourself. The possibilities are endless. Me? I like to add a little pizazz to the things I design. So I decided to fashion a few birthday cards for friends using sequins.

It’s always fun to receive balloons with a card, but haven’t you heard? There’s a helium shortage. If you can’t bring someone actual balloons, why not put them on the card? These birthday balloon cards are super easy to make. Check out the how-to below!

To make your own birthday balloon cards you’ll need:

  • Blank cards
  • Sequins
  • Baker’s twine
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pencil
  • Balloon-shaped cookie cutter
Step 1: Draw a balloon on the front of your card. If you are a talented artist, you can draw one. I’m not that skilled at free-hand, so I traced a balloon using a cookie cutter.

Step 2: Using the hot glue gun, attach the sequins to the drawn edges of the balloon shape. Trace hot glue all the way around and overlap the edge of the sequins and dot in place with a small drop of hot glue.

Step 3: Draw a small line of hot glue below the balloon and attach the baker’s twine. This will act as the small string tied to the balloon.

Step 4: Write your sweet birthday message on the inside of the card. Give to friends and enjoy.

Make a handful of these at once, and keep them stocked for future birthdays. If you have to head to a last minute birthday bash, you can reach in the drawer and grab one of these cards on the go. Handmade and beautiful. Everyone will love them!
