Each year, when the days become longer and the sun hotter, I find myself looking some new skirt patterns to sew for my little girl. And it’s even better if they’re free, like these ones!

1. Gathered Skirt with Flat-Front Waistband
While I love gathered skirts, I just don’t like skirts that are fully gathered all around, with added fullness at the front waist. This free pattern for girls is wisely designed to have a flat front waistband portion and a back elastic portion.Get the FREE Pattern

2. Reversible Paper Bag Skirt
The so-called “paper bag” skirt is high waisted, tightened down at the waist like a paper bag. This is perfect for adding fullness to mini skirts. And as a bonus: It’s totally reversible! You can double the fun (and the number of skirts in your closet) by using a different fabric for each side.

3. Playground Skirt
I don’t know about your girls, but my daughter wants to wear a skirt and she wants to climb, do cartwheels and refuses to politely sit down. Here’s the solution: add a pair of shorts underneath her skirts so you and your daughter will both be satisfied.

4. Aivilo Apron Skirt
Little girls always have something to carry around and, if their skirt has no pockets, you know where all those little treasures end up: in mom’s bag! Give her skirt an apron-style pocket for something a little different.

5. Free Girls Maxi Skirt Pattern
This maxi skirt pattern comes with a matching pattern for women, in a wide range of sizes, so you can create that oh-so adorable “mommy and me” style. The A-line skirt, sewn in knit fabric, will come together in a flash.

6. Ruffled Arch Skirt
From the front, this skirt might look like a plain, A-line mini skirt. But when you look at the back side — wow, that’s one special skirt! There’s a ruffled party going on back there. Showcase your colorful fabric scraps in that portion, your girl will love this skirt.

7. Tiered Skirt
One of the easiest styles of skirts to sew is the tiered skirt. I love that you can easily add color blocking just by using different fabrics for each tier. Add or reduce fullness with extra gathering. Bonus: As your girl grows taller, just add another tier to get more use.
Let me add just one more style of skirt to this list: the circle skirt! This is my favorite, due to the twirling factor and because it’s a really quick and easy sewing. If you want to sew it in ANY size, please refer to this tutorial!
