How to Crochet Cute Polka Dot Granny Squares

While granny squares are almost always worked in the round, you don’t usually find a circle in the center. But this design option shouldn’t be overlooked: With a circle in the middle, you can combine the soft, curved shape of the circle with the graphic, angular edges of the granny square, creating a beautiful pattern.

When you work the circles in one color and the rest of the square in another, it creates the effects of polka dots. You can also work each round of each square in a different color, crochet each circle-in-a-square motif in a solid color or play with any number of variations to get a unique look for your granny square project.

Learn how to crochet a granny square with a circle in the middle (in three different sizes!)

No matter what size you want your circle to be, the basic size will be the same. You’ll make a double crochet circle, grow the circle (according to the mathematical rules of making a flat crochet circle) and finally turn the circle into a square using the basic design of the classic granny square. Let’s take a look at the details:

Note that when you first create the round that turns your motif from a circle into a square, it may look a little wonky — not quite like a square. You can fix this by blocking your square. If you continue to crochet additional rounds in the classic granny square format then the square will usually straighten itself out without additional blocking required.
