Udder-ly Adorable: A Step-by-Step Cow Cupcake Tutorial

A farm-themed party is an adorable idea for a cowboy or cowgirl’s birthday celebration or even a simple backyard barbecue. And cows are the perfect sweet embellishment for any of these barn-themed bashes! Plus, what could be cuter than a bovine cupcake to graze your dessert table?

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to create an udder-ly adorable cow cupcake spotted down on the farm!

Materials needed:

  • White, black and light pink fondant
  • Fondant rolling pin with 1/8″ guide rings
  • 1/4″ wooden dowels
  • Water/edible glue and brush
  • 7/8″ & 2 7/8″ circle cutter (the latter size should be large enough to fit over your cupcake’s surface)
  • Medium oval cutter
  • Round decorating tip #5, #10 and #12
  • Precision knife
  • Fondant modeling stick
  • Large flower forming cup
  • Vegetable shortening
  • Powdered sugar & dusting bag
  • Cupcake, icing and spatula

Step 1:

Roll white fondant thick (approximately 1/2″ in thickness) and cut out a medium-sized oval with the cutter.

Step 2:

Dip your fingers in a bit of shortening and begin to round out the perimeter of the oval.

Step 3:

With your fingers, narrow the top of the oval to form the cow’s head.

Step 4:

Roll out the light pink fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings. Cut out a circle with the 7/8″ round cutter.

Step 5:

Form the light pink circle at the wider end of the cow’s head and trim off the excess with the precision knife. Tuck the cut end underneath and glue it in place. Turn the large flower forming cup upside down and sprinkle some powdered sugar over the top so the fondant does not stick to it. Place the cow’s head over it so that it begins to dry in a position that will fit nicely over a cupcake later.

Step 6:

Utilize the modeling tool to make two indentations towards the top of the light pink circle to create the nostrils.

Step 7:

With the bottom of one of the round decorating tips, make an indentation for the mouth. With the modeling tool, create another indentation at the center of the mouth to open it up a bit.

Step 8:

Roll white fondant thick with the rolling pin and wooden dowels as guides. Cut out two circles with round decorating tip #10 and two more with tip #12.

Step 9:

Roll the larger white circles into balls, then shape them into teardrops. Flatten them out a bit on your work surface.

Step 10:

Roll light pink fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings. Cut out two circles with round decorating tip #10.

Step 11:

Roll the light pink circles into balls, then shape them into teardrops.

Step 12:

Glue the light pink teardrops over the white teardrops. Make an indentation in the center with the modeling tool, then pinch and shape them into the cow’s ears. Glue them in place.

Step 13:

Roll the other two smaller white circles into balls, then into teardrops. Flatten out the bottom and shape them into horns. Glue them in place in between the cow’s ears.

Step 14:

Roll out black fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings. Utilizing round decorating tip #5, cut out two circles, then roll them into balls to create the eyes. Glue in place on the cow’s face.

Step 15:

Cut out a couple more circles with round decorating tip #10. Rub a tiny bit of vegetable shortening over one circle and flatten it out with your fingers. Then begin to pull it apart gently to create a spot for the cow. Repeat as desired with additional circles in various sizes and glue them in place on the cow’s face.

Step 16:

Roll out white fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings and cut a large circle with the 2 7/8″ round cutter (or one large enough cover the entirety of your cupcake’s surface).

Step 17:

Coat the surface of the cupcake with icing with the spatula. Gently place the white fondant over the iced cupcake to cover the entire surface with fondant.

Step 18:

Roll out black fondant with the rolling pin and 1/8″ guide rings. Utilize different small round cutters to cut out circles and repeat the steps to create spots for the cow’s body.

Step 19:

Glue the cow’s head in place and strategically glue the spots to the cow’s body over the cupcake.
