they are called wedges, and used to tighten the canvas (but if the canvas is dented, I like to paint or spray water on the back of it first, which shrinks the fibres). There are usually 2 for each corner because there are 2 slots where the canvas stretchers meet. The straight edge of the wedge is supposed to sit snug with the straight edge of the canvas, and the angled part inwards. They look like an L shape when fitted correctly (finish tapping gently with a hammer). If not, then they’re probably backwards.
