Project Description

What is exciting or interesting to you about your photo(s)? I have photographed a few sunsets but had never given a sunrise a shot. I've always really wanted to spend some time in Dartmoor taking photographs. I hit the road really early and climbed two very rocky slopes in the dark in order to reach these Tors. There are a few other images from on and around Dartmoor here throw in. I am pretty pleased with the results but could do with an upgrade from my D90 to give me just that little bit more resolution to play with. I hope you like them.

What you will need

  • I used my D90 with a 17-55mm 2.8
  • this rarely comes off the camera. Filters were going to be tricky to use here due to the outcrops of rock
  • so I opted to under expose to retain the beautiful colours in the sky and gently bring the rest up in Lightroom. I would say the biggest skill applied though was patience
  • waiting for breaks in the rain and waiting for the light to hit the rocks in just the right way. Oh
  • and a great deal of luck.

Q&A with Paulusjames

Rick Sammon asked:
Love the sky. However, the clouds are overexposed in one area. HDR would have done the trick here. Happy Holidays.
Paulusjames answered:
Thanks Rick, you're right, it's a bit hot out there to the left but I haven't been very pleased with the results of some of my attempts at HDR...perhaps that's a subject for another Craftsy course. In the meantime, I'll keep practicing...Happy holidays to you too and a Happy New year.

Beautiful shots. Where is this location?
Paulusjames answered:
Thank you Sarah. The location is Dartmoor in the UK. It's a great place to wander, even if you're not taking pictures.
TiaMaria asked:
Truly stunning work; shows an intimate relationship to nature and a genuine appreciation for both cold and warm light. I genuinely wish I had been there....
Paulusjames answered:
Thank you very much was a truly beautiful morning, even with the rain.
