Background Bokeh

What are you most proud of? The bokeh effect and my smiling model! I took this in my living room. I didn't have much light to work with but I'm happy how well it turned out. I lightened it up in photoshop afterwards. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Play with the distance your model is from the background and how far camera is from model.

Q&A with Erinf31

Victor Ripa asked:
the picture is o.k. however did it really require such a sprkly background? also it could have been sharpened up considerably, looks as though you were not focused on any specific detail..soft lens?
Erinf31 answered:
I used a 50mm f1.4 lens. My model was moving. That could account for the soft focus. I try to focus on the eyes.
