I love the shape and functionality of this bag, but I would like to maximize the size based on United under seat carry on limit. Would it be too difficult to make it 17 Long?

Julie, That is a great question. Just split each piece from the top center to the bottom center, and add 2" Make sure you include the zipper gusset and the bottom gusset. That will do it!

Just a quick question. I was thinking of adding a zipper the bottom of the trolley sleeve to use as an extra pocket when not traveling with a roller bag. What would be the best way to do so? Also was thinking of adding a long shoulder strap do you think this is do able?

Great question. I have thought about it a lot. I haven't done it because there is not enough room at the bottom of the pocket the way it is, to add a zipper. If I were going to do it, I would take an inch off the bottom of the pocket and replace that inch with a zipper. I would worry about the zipper breaking with use in that spot and also about it coming undone when I was using the pocket - so I still would choose not to do it.
For the strap, make the top edges of the straps ring holders instead of taking them around as handles. They will have to be sewn down securely and reinforced to handle the weight. Then you can clip adjustable straps to them. See my new pattern that has a similar feature worked into it: http://www.craftsy.com/pattern/sewing/accessory/big-weekend-bag/110421
I hope that helps!

Cherie, I am making the Departure Satchel and it's going very well but I have a question and possible error.
First, I bought the Pellon 50 but that was a sew in interfacing. The Decor Bond is number 809.
The question I have also concerns the decor bond. On page 4 it says you need only a 10"x10" piece but pattern piece H says to cut three, one of duck, one decor bond, and one feature fabric. It doesn't show the bottom duck piece being fused on page 14, so I am wondering if it needs to be interfaced or not.
Thanks so much; I plan to post pictures when I am done.
Liz

I only fuse to the bottom piece of duck. Nice catch. Thank you!

Cherie, I am debating whether to make this travel bag or wait until you have finished the new design of the trolley bag. I have almost decided to go on ahead and make this one. What I want to do is embroider a design on the front of the bag. The design is a tad smaller than 7x7. Would it be feasible to do that to the front of this bag or maybe the trolley bag? If the trolley bag would be better, I can wait on it. I think you stated that it will be ready in Sept.

The departure duffle (which I think is what you mean when you say trolley bag because I do already have the trolley duffle out) is a little delayed and may not be out in time. I am buried in slipcovers right now.
Your embroidery will fit nicely on the front of this bag. You may have to move the front zipper up by 1/2"

Working on this now and love it. I am making it to match the trolley duffle. Pattern is very detailed and all I can say is don't skip ahead in the steps. They are in the order for a reason. Some sounded confusing to me but when you do exactly as told, it all works out. I quilted my fabric on my midarm and used the deco bond also for more structure since I was using batik fabric and not a stiffer decorating fabric.
