Basic Skills Necessary:

  • cast on, knit, purl, bind off, increases, decreases
  • read charts

Pattern Description:

Wonderberry is a triangular lace shawl worked top-down, ending with a beaded, scalloped edging. The pattern PDF gives instructions for knitting the shawl in three sizes: small (medium, large). The "wingspan" (width of top edge, after blocking) for each size is 45 (54, 63) inches/114 (137, 160) cm.

The shawl requires 375 (525, 750) yards/343 (481, 686) m fingering weight yarn. The sample shown in the photos is the medium size and was knit with Periwinkle Sheep Diamant [80 percent superwash merino, 20 percent silk] in the Cayenne colorway.

You'll also need a 24- or 32-inch US6/4.00mm circular knitting needle and a size 10/1.15 mm steel crochet hook for placing the beads. The three sizes require 126 (154, 182) #6 seed beads. The pattern provides instructions for how to place beads using the crochet hook method.

Pattern difficulty: advanced beginner/intermediate. Experience reading charts (or willingness to learn) and some experience with lace knitting are helpful.

Skills required include casting on, knitting, purling, increases and decreases, binding off, reading charts. Stitch patterns are provided in charts.
