About the designer

My mom taught me to embroider when I was five, little knowing she was creating a craft monster at the time. Fifty years later, I'm still at it, beading, embroidering, knitting, and whatever else ...

Night Circus Gauntlets

Night Circus Gauntlets

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Knit
  • Purl
  • Knit 2 Together
  • Purl 2 Together
  • Slip Stitch

Pattern Description:

Capturing the mystery and magic of the Big Top at night, Night Circus Gauntlets are a fun and interesting knit. They are easy to work and delightful to wear.

The gauntlets are easily resized by working more or fewer wedges for the cuff. As written, Night Circus will fit hands from 7 to 8-1/2 inches (17.75 - 21.6 cm) in circumference.

The design can support playful, wildly contrasting colors, to make a bold statement; but more muted tones look lovely and sophisticated, too. I do think it works best when the Main Color is a solid or semisolid, while the Contrast Color is more flamboyant, either in a strongly contrasting solid, or a highly variegated yarn--a great way to use up the "clown barf" in your stash!

Partial skeins of each color are sufficient to make the gauntlets. Allow about 200 yards of the main color and 100 yards of the contrasting color.

Pattern difficulty: Experienced beginner. Links to YouTube videos are provided, as back up to my written instructions. I believe an experienced beginner could successfully make these gauntlets. You'll learn the "German Short Row" method of shaping, which will make you leave "wrap and turn" behind forever! Also explained are the Make One Right and Left, and 3-Needle Bind Off.

Techniques: Long Tail Cast On, German Short Rows, 3-Needle Bind-Off, Eyelets, picking up stitches, slipped stitches, M1L, M1R, P2TOG, K2TOG, SSK

The gauntlets are worked in two sections: the cuff and the hand. The cuff is worked flat, using short row shaping. The hand is then picked up along the cuff edge and worked in the round.

Pattern is written for Magic Loop, when knitting in the round. Feel free to use whatever kind of circular knitting style you prefer.
