A 4-page lesson in Chinese paper quilling: Unique in its beauty of flowing swirls and wave crescents. The basic components are much like the wheatears, swirls, and pulled shapes of historic quilling. The design team at Zhu Liqun Paper Arts Museum in China has taken the components to an art form of color balance and beauty in their book Paper Quilling Chinese Style. They feel they have taken “a western paper craft for fun and decoration … and transformed it to a representational art that incorporates Chinese traditional culture” by adding an oriental influence. Their book gave me a clear direction I’m passing on: “You are strongly encouraged to think outside of the box and be adventurous with your paper strips.” Betta’s Splendor is my own “think outside of the box” design. My prayer is always that my designs will encourage you to have fun and get your twirl on!
