Winter Self-Portrait #MyCraftsySelfie

Project Description

What was your source for this piece? Other Tell us a little more about your inspiration. I had never painted a portrait before, so I decided to give it a go. It was the winter time and I was kind of feeling down, so I painted this to reflect my feelings with the dark background and serious facial expression. I was also inspired by 17th century paintings, which had dark backgrounds with the main focus on the person. Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. This painting was done on a 12x9 canvas. I started by lightly mapping out my face with burnt umber and white acrylics while using a reference photo I took of myself. After that dried, I went right in with the oil paints. I experimented a lot while making the skin color, because I had had very little experience with oil paints. I used only brushes for the face, but when I got to the hair, body, and background, I used a palette knife and brush. Is the piece for sale? No
