Q&A with Fiona Ellis

carolynec asked:
Your Cabling work is so impressive!! I couldn't wait to grab your book and reread. for my mother-in-luv im making her a Tree of Life cabled pillow cover for a 16x16 pillow. even though i've only been knittnig a year & a 1/2 I love to gauge swatch yarn since I am not following a pattern but creating my own. if you were to gauge swatch the cable pattern for your pillow here, would you make sure you complete at least 2 cable motif repeats? I did a swatch for my mother in luvs pillow but only swatched the ribbing, seed stitch and stocking stitch portion which is about 70% of the cover, but i didn't however swatch a portion of the tree of life cable because compared to most of the cables i knit theres really not a whole lot too the tree of life but what if i wanted to change the trunk to say a cable that twists every 5 or 7 rows?sorry i prob shouldnt of asked this here. beautiful pillow Miss Fiona
Fiona Ellis answered:
Glad that you like the pillow. My rule of thumb is to always swatch over the pattern I will be using and if I think that there might need to be adjustments in st count swatch over te changes to see what happens- so that will then give me an indication of how much I will need to inc or dec. For a pillow once side might be my "swatch" knowing that I may need to re-knit it to fine tune the transitions. Hope this helps. Please post more questions if you have them on the platform for the class as I will see them there more easily.
