My Fair-Isle Vest

Project Description

What advice would you give someone starting this project? My notes for this project: I've always wished to steek - and knit a traditional Fair-Isle Vest. I knit it surprisingly fast (working two colors at the time) in the round and the steeking was easy - following the clear step-by-step instructions in this Craftsy class. For shaping I changed to a bigger/smaller needlesize (to account for the age surplus around my stomach, LOL). Also I chose to add an extra pattern rapport for more length. From swatching to the finished garment I knitted during 16 days - it was during the Christmas holidays, so I had lots of time to knit. The HIFA yarn (ASK) was certainly a good substitue for the yarn the pattern calls for (which is not for sale here in Norway - and I wanted the yarn FAST). It's the right type of sticky wool which is so perfect for a Fair Isle project. Also the HIFA ASK goes a long way - ordering the same weight as called for in the pattern I have at least for one more vest - and some other smal projects. My advice: GO FOR IT - you'll end up with new skils and a very versatile and beautiful vest in the traditional fair-isle pattern. Pick out the colors carefully - because this is a vest you'll be able to wear for years to come :)

What you will need

  • Yarn from Hifa: ASK 100% norwegian wool. 2 ply 100 grams / app. 315 meters. I had to substitute yarn to be able to buy it here in Norway. This was the type that fit the description best. I chose colors as near as possible to the ones used in the Craftsy class.

Q&A with Charlotte Norwa

Tobytomkitten asked:
That is just gorgeous on you.
Charlotte Norwa answered:
Thanks :)

it's simply beautiful! I have been a knitter for over 40 years and each time I try Fair Isle I give up because I am such a tight knitter and everything puckers. Haven't tried steeking either, yikes! Anyway, you have inspired me to try this class so thank you for sharing your thoughts and pictures. The sweater looks great on you as well!
Charlotte Norwa answered:
Thanks :)
