(Not-So) Basic Cable!

Project Description

What are you most proud of? This is my very first cabling class, and the simple right cross is my very first cable ever! (I'll be adding photos of more swatches as I progress. The course includes instruction in several cable patterns + projects). It's hugely gratifying to be tackling things that look pretty advanced this early on in my knitting "career". They're not mistake-free, but I'm chuffed. What advice would you give someone starting this project? If at first you don't succeed... (Seriously patting myself on the back for mastering that reverse/purl cast-on!) Don't forget Craftsy has slow-mo options in addition to the 30 second repeat. Definitely used the x.25 to nail that technique down!

What you will need

  • I used my bamboo double points and my ever-lasting skein (400m-worth) of cream
  • 100% acrylic yarn. I don't view swatching as simply a means to an end or the knitting equivalent of being told to eat your veggies. I actually really like doing them
  • especially when they're as motivating and skill-building as the ones in this course. But
  • alas
  • finances are a bit lean
  • so for the time being I'm keeping my skill-building dry runs to the more budget friendly yarn.
  • US 8 / 5.0 mm / UK 6

Q&A with immisceo

Cara Michelle asked:
Love the texture.
immisceo answered:
Thanks! These were done months ago and my knitting has come on leaps and bounds since then. I have it in mind to do all of these swatches again. It would be fun to compare! Also diving into Fiona Ellis's Mastering Cable Design course. There's just something so magical about cables. Watching them come together is addictive! (and I LOVE your Autumn Poncho project. Cables on that scale are mesmerising)
