This 18-page knitting pattern creates a Victorian-inspired tam with a modern twist. A vibrant, soft yarn with a sheen and long color changes is showcased in this modular pattern, which creates a lovely drapey tam with optional bobbles near the face. The pattern includes illustrated written instructions for creating the tam in three sizes, with several variations, as well as photo tutorials on making a bobble, the Chain Cast On, Gwennie's Increase (a different kind of M-1), picking up stitches purlwise, Centered Double Decrease, and making a tassel, and also a section on yarn possibilities for the tam. I was originally inspired by a beautiful rainbow-hued yarn, with long color changes. I made a beautiful tam from it, using this modular technique; but alas, by the time I got ready to write up the pattern, the yarn had been discontinued. I chose instead Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable, which also had long color segments and also had a beautiful sheen. This pattern is knitted in kite-shaped wedges, which are each joined to the previous wedge as in domino knitting. When all the wedges are knitted, stitches are picked up around the outer edge and the body of the tam is knitted down to the ribbing. Optional bobbles give additional texture, and the tam is finished with a rolled edge. Also included in the pattern are instructions for the Zigzag Tam, a variation in which two colors are alternated on the top of the tam, for a stripey zigzag effect. I was taught the basics of knitting, crochet, embroidery, and sewing by my grandmother when I was young. I have found that I enjoy doing a variety of fiber related crafts, and have over the years learned to spin yarn, weave, tat, braid, felt and bead. But the greatest satisfaction for me comes from using my God-given creativity to create my own designs and techniques.
