I designed this monster toy for my baby girl before she was born. When she was a newborn, she just sort of randomly reached out and touched it, but now as a toddler, she has tea parties with it and hugs it and makes it dance. This little monster's crooked smile makes you wonder what it gets up to when you're not around. It will seriously delight the little person in your life, and will also delight their parents if made with washable yarn & stuffing! But that's not to say that grown-ups won't love one, too, just chillin' on a bookshelf or tucked between couch pillows for fun. The monster shown is made in worsted-weight yarn, but this would be an adorable pocket monster if made with sock yarn and smaller needles. Don't be intimidated by the Expert rating. There are lots of pieces to make and assemble, but there are a couple different construction options based on your skills. It's challenging but not overly so, and it's really fun to watch the monster come together. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit on double-pointed needles knit small-diameter objects increase and decrease basic sock construction (optional, for one foot type) crochet - slip stitch, sc, hdc, dc (optional, for crocheted eye/mouth type) GAUGE 5 sts and 5.5 rows = 1" Gauge is not crucial for this project. Every knitter's gauge is different so your toy may be slightly larger or smaller depending on how you knit. That said, this pattern is intended to be rather tightly knit. If you tend to knit more loosely, you may want to go down a needle size or two so that when this toy is stuffed, the stuffing won't show through. Make a gauge swatch if you're in doubt. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Seated toy is about 12" tall without horns SUGGESTED YARN 600 yards of Worsted weight COLORWAY 250-300 yards of each of two colors

Recommended with this pattern

  • US 6/4.0mm double-pointed needles, set of 4 or 5
  • yarn needle
  • polyester fiberfill or wool stuffing

I live on an orange ranch with my husband and two small children. Keeping them happy is a full-time job, but I still manage to squeeze in some time to knit or draw or sew whenever I can. Even though the days of crafting away an entire afternoon (ok, entire day) are gone, the joy of giving my kids something I made by hand makes up for it. I love the challenge of designing something and ripping it out or starting over and trying again until I make it right. I really, really love to say, "I made that!" One day I plan to write and illustrate some clever children's books, and maybe some strange art books for adults.
