PATTERN DETAILS

This cozy neck scarf is knit from the bottom up. New stitches are added at each side edge to make a triangle with long, skinny armsjust right to warm your shoulders or to wrap and tie around your neck to cover that bare spot above your coat collar. The spiraling rib stitch pattern is easy to memorize and keeps the knitting interesting. It not only looks ruggedly handsome in a solid or tweed, but also tames the pooling that can occur with variegated yarns. Both sides are attractive so you can choose how to wear it. Instructions are included for two versions. (Note the piece is knit flat, but a circular needle is recommended due to the large number of stitches.) Version 1 (sock weight): 360 yards (329 m) of fingering/sock weight yarn such as Malabrigo Sock US Size 7 (4.5 mm) 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 16 sts/30 rows = 4 inches Finished size: 69 inches (175 cm) x 16 inches (41 cm) Version 2 (worsted weight): 195 yards (178 m) of a worsted weight yarn, such as Cascade Yarns Venezia Worsted US Size 9 (5.5 mm) 24-inch (60 cm) circular needle or size needed to obtain gauge Gauge: 16 sts/24 rows = 4 inches Finished size: 45 inches (114 cm) x 11.5 inches (29 cm) If you have more yarn and want a shawlette or shawl, just keep going until you run out.
