How it works

  • This pattern was designed by a Craftsy independent design partner!
  • You'll purchase through PayPal and all profits go to the designer.
  • After purchase find your pattern in your pattern library.

This design was inspired by Edna Pontellier, the main character in Kate Chopin's novella "The Awakening." The main body of the shawl is worked in one stitch pattern, giving it a simple elegance. Then the lace border comes along to shake things up a little bit, just like that fateful summer at the shore did for Mrs. Pontellier. This pattern is suitable for a first lace project; the lace repeats are easy to memorize, making it an easy summer knit for experienced knitters as well. The shawl's shape keeps it on your shoulders easily and the project goes quickly with just a single skein of yarn. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit, purl, basic lace stitches (K2tog, KFB, YO, SKP) GAUGE 22 stitches and 32 rows = 4 inches in main body lace pattern SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS finished shawl measures 47 inches across at top edge by 16 inches deep

Supplies Needed

  • fingering weight yarn, 100g
  • circular knitting needles size US 6 (or size needed for gauge)
  • stitch markers (optional but helpful)

I've been crafting since I was a little girl. My mom used to knit and sew, and I picked things up along the way. I've been crafting obsessively since I became a mom, and I've been doing it as a business for the past two or three years. I believe that we tell stories through our crafts, so I have a fiber arts line that is inspired by all of our favorite stories in books, movies and TV shows. You can find me there at
