This pattern is charted AND fully written out! This design is named for the god of wine, merriment, madness, ecstasy, and celebration. In Roman mythology he goes by the name Bacchus, the last god to join the 12 Olympians. In Greek mythology he is called Dionysus. In both mythologies he is the son of the King of the Gods (Jupiter/Zeus) and a mortal woman. Upon finding out of her husband's latest affair, the Mother Goddess (Juno/Hera) visited the mortal woman and tricked her into asking to see her lover in his true form and thus prove his claims of divinity. The King of the Gods knew that showing his true self would be fatal to the woman, but he was left no choice and so revealed himself. Before the brightness of his presence killed the woman he was able to rescue his unborn son from her womb and secure the fetus inside his thigh. There the god remained until ready for birth. Merriment begins at the center wingspan and increases outward and down toward the bottom edge. Clusters of grapes adorn the center of the design to symbolize the connection between the god Bacchus/Dionysus and that which he is most famous for: wine. I chose to randomly place seed beads on the yarn overs of the last 16 rows. Adding beads is optional. If you decide to do so then you can either string the beads prior to cast on, or cut the yarn and add them later. (I chose the latter so I wasn't pushing 160 beads out of my way the entire time.)
