Lucky Duck's a fun hat for kids and small size adults to wear (the Large fits my 21.5" head circumference perfectly), but a little complex to knit. I'd recommend it for an intermediate knitter who's comfortable working with several yarns at the same time. The colors are worked as intarsia blocks, not stranded across the back like Fair Isle knitting. The wings and beak are joined to the hat with a 3 Needle Join. This is similar to a 3 Needle Bind Off, but the stitches remain on the needle. The wings can be worn as ear flaps, or buttoned back. The eyes are added with Duplicate Stitch. There are separate written instructions and colored charts for each size hat. Instructions are included for the 3 Needle Join. Also included are Lucky Duck gift tags for you to print. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Basic knitting stitches. How to work with blocks of color (intarsia). How to read a chart. 3 Needle Join (or 3 Needle Bind Off) Duplicate Stitch for eyes. GAUGE 4 sts = 1" (16 sts = 4") SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 15.25" X-SMALL. 16.5" SMALL. 17.75 MEDIUM 19" LARGE. PREFERRED BRAND/YARN I used Red Heart, but any similar weight yarn is fine.
