Knit 'em up - stack 'em up and have fun playing with blocks and learn new tips and tricks as you go! The Playing With Blocks Afghan uses a variety of stitches and techniques in a glorious array of color that will brighten any room. I've chosen light and medium values in clear, jewel colors plus black as an anchor and join color. You can use the colors I list or plan a combination to coordinate with any room. One feature of this design is that as long as the blocks in each vertical panel are the same width, you can continue knitting that pattern stitch as long as you enjoy it or until you finish a color sequence or pattern repeat. If a certain pattern isn't fun anymore, just bind it off and go to another one! The afghan is made up of three vertical panels of blocks joined together with a border at top and bottom. The two outside panels were 12" wide before assembly and the center panel was 131/2". I sewed a super soft fabric called Minky to the back, but if you don't sew an alternate would be a crocheted or knitted edging. To see how each block played with the others, I taped together two tri-fold foam core presentation display boards, one on top of the other. I kept it propped against the wall using a section for each of the vertical panels. I pinned and rearranged the blocks as I finished them. Seeing how a new block would affect the whole kept me knitting late many nights! I used Black,as the anchor color with light and medium values of red, orange, yellow, green, blue-green, blue and violet. The colors listed may differ slightly from the pictures. I used bits from my stash on some blocks. If you run out of a color suggested, use the next closest. I grew up in the middle of Iowa doing almost all crafts, but knitting and crochet have remained my real and abiding love and passions. I became a professional designer over twenty years ago, was Director of Design for Cascade yarns from 1993 to 1996 and started Knit One, Crochet Too, a wholesale yarn and pattern company in 1996. I literally wrote the book on crochet. Some have called Crochet Your Way "arguably the most comprehensive book on crochet ever published." It has remained a top seller for twelve years! I'm retired from going into an office now, which gives me time to design again and I love it.
