The Fireside Throw grew out of a fascination with slip-stitch mosaic knitting. It's a great way to get maximum impact from simple technique; use some imagination with the colors and the result looks far more complex to knit than it actually is. The fabric is thick and warm without too much bulk - this is because of the slip-stitch pattern used to create the fabric. This project uses 8 colors, four blue tones and four red/pink tones. Varying how they touch each other creates a constantly-changing interplay of color and texture. The actual pattern repeat covers 96 rows and no two colors touch each other in exactly the same way for that entire space. After a while, you may not need to follow the instructions row-by-row: you'll see the color sequences forming. It would look great using a handpainted or multi-color yarn combined with a colorway of solids, or perhaps two complementary multi-color yarns - there are endless possibilities. The blanket is knit to and fro in one piece on a long circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches. Then a border is added to each edge separately and stitched in the corners, to finish it off. It's a big project but the constant color changes keep it interesting. I've been knitting for (OMG!) over 50 years. But wait: I started when I was about 4 so that's not so bad! I love things that look hard to make but are actually really easy, and I very much enjoy the challenge of off-the-wall construction techniques. I had my own mail order knitting kit business for a while, and I was President and co-founder of the Knitting Guild of Canada. I am also a Master Knitter as accredited by TKGA and I was the creator and evaluator of the Canadian Master Knitter program run by TKGC. So, let's get knitting!
