I had a storage box full of small balls of sock yarn... too much to throw away, not enough to make anything wearable. I have dogs and I walk them daily. I was always forgetting to stick a bag or two in my pocket. I was looking at various dog waste bag containers in Petco and Petsmart and suddenly it hit me... knit one! So I did. I loop the i-cord around the handle of each dog's leash. Dog friends oooo'ed and ahhhh'ed over them, so I knit more. Next thing you know, I am knitting them by the dozen and using them to raise money for Australian Shepherd rescue... to date I have raised over $300 selling them at pet rescue events at $5 each! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Knit in the round Yarn over Knit 2 together I-cord GAUGE not really important for this project, but 6.5-8/stitches per inch will work. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS about 5" long, 2.5" wide Holds one roll of dog waste pickup bags.

Supplies Needed

  • 10 grams of sock yarn
  • Size 1/2.5 mm in either 2 short circular needles, double pointed needles or 40" circular for magic loop
  • stitch marker if you use DPNs

I learned to knit when I was 10 or so (50+ years ago), but didn't get serious with knitting garments until my late 20s, when I lived in Germany as a US soldier. I learned to sew when I was in 8th grade, and I still have and use the pin cushion, wrist pin cushion, tape measure and other sewing stuff from my first sewing box. I tried crocheting back in the late 70s, but just didn't like it as much as knitting.
