As a young child, I once bottlefed a Holstein calf. The calf licked my arm, seemingly from elbow to wrist, with a pink and white tongue. This project reminds me of that calf's tongue color and texture. This project was knit with a handspun yarn from a bead show. Any chunky weight yarn would work. It is a good introduction to textured stitches, including basketweave and slip stitch patterns. GAUGE 10 stitches x 20 rows = 4: in stockinette SUGGESTED YARN 300 yards of Chunky weight PREFERRED BRAND/YARN any chunky weight, sample knitted with handspun yarn from a bead show COLORWAY pink

At 6 years of age, scraps of lace found their way onto my doll’s clothes. Later, sewing skills advanced to making a kilt then art quilts. I began knitting in 2006, when seven months pregnant with my second child. With two children in diapers, a full time job, a husband, a farmhouse on 5 acres and 2 cats, knitting became my meditation. Watercolor painting, seed beading and gardening are also prevalent in my studio. Largely self-taught through books, with emergency help from knitting friends and my LYS, I find myself knitting during lunch breaks, sport practices, scout meetings and every evening before reluctantly sleeping.
