Coasters are a way to use up left-over yarn in your stash. Make up several sets to keep on hand in your "gift closet". The 100 % cotton yarns soak up moisture and garter stitch pattern makes a firm, but cushiony "base" for coaster.. I made a set in wool yarn to felt. I changed the pattern from garter stitch to stockinett pattern, realizing garter stitch pattern would not show up after "felting". I used a multi-colored yarn, self-stripping, I think---loved it! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Basic knitting and some experience with "short row" technique.---just follow the directions and all will be well! GAUGE 4sts = 1 inch; accurate gauge is not essential SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Coasters measure about 4" across COLORWAY solid colors show up pattern best!

Supplies Needed

  • Worsted wt. cotton yarn and size 7 needles. Odd and ends of yarn from your "stash" will work. About 4 oz. of yarn will make 4 coasters
  • Actually, used 70 oz skein
  • Large eye yarn needle for joining

My favorite hobbies are --- knitting, playing Mah Jong,, reading, and travel. Knitting became a "passion" too many years ago to remember. I usually begin my day with knitting and end it the same way. I took the "long way" to learn the "ins and outs" of knitting, but once I got it, I got it! I remember realizing one day how important "gauge" was. What a revelation that was! Before, I had disregarded anything I did not understand and simply plowed on to the next project, etc. Needless to say, many of my first efforts were disappointing. Sometimes I got lucky, but what a waste of time and effort "knitting blind"!
