CraftLit--a Free Podcast for Crafters Who Love Books needed a mascot! Enter Cheddar, stage right! Cheddar is knit all in one piece (because, truly, I loathe seaming). He begins with Judy's Magic Cast-on (linked to from the pattern pdf), then his nose grows a bit like a sock toe. His top-of-head and back-of-neck are built through the judicious use of short-rows. His body increases quickly below the neck then proceeds in regular rounds until you're ready for a purl/turning round. Base decreases are similar to a hat. Stuff him with whatever you have handy, then add weighted beads (or in my case, Buckwheat Groats) and VOILA! A buddy to sit with you when you're lonely, faced with piles of papers to grade or emails to read, or lousy TV to watch. If you add some weighted beads you'll also make him more "Weeble"-like. He's a great buddy--and looks great in a inspired Shakespearean Ruff. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit, purl, increase, decrease, pick up sts GAUGE roughly 8.5 sts=1inch (the more important factor is to get a very dense fabric so the stuffing doesn't show. Go down a size in needle if necessary. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS +/-5inches dependent upon gauge and personal preference

Supplies Needed

  • +/- 100 yes of sock-weight yarn, six US 0/2mm needles
  • stitch markers, tapestry needles, stuffing, safety eyes (or yarn to crochet/sew eyes)
