This scarf is named for the early male counterpart to the Roman goddess Ceres (goddess of grain and agriculture), who never made it into the regular Roman pantheon. The way the colors of the yarn wove together in Linen Stitch reminded me of wheat somehow, and because it's a knit appropriate for men, I dug up the name of this obsolete god. The scarf is knit in Linen Stitch lengthwise (each row travels the entire length of the scarf, rather than back and forth along the width). BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit purl slip stitches cast on bind off GAUGE 26 sts per 4"/ 10 cm in Linen St (row gauge is not important). Note: Tapestry has an advertised gauge of 22 sts per 4"/ 10 cm in Stockinette with US 6 needles SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 7.25 x 54"/18.5 x 137 cm SUGGESTED YARN 450 yards of DK weight

Supplies Needed

  • 4 balls of Rowan Tapestry (131 yds/120 m per ball) in color 170 or 450 yds/411 m of a similar yarn (see 09/cerus-yarn-substitutions.html)
  • US 8 (5mm) circular needle, at least 40"
  • Tapestry Needle (for weaving ends)
