Winter in the Carolinas doesn't necessitate heavy gear in the day-to-day. This quick and easy knit is open enough for breathing room, but still gives those of us in mild climates a chance to play with cold-weather yarn. Hat is knit bottom-up, in the round, with sizes for all ages. Pattern is written with lots of tips for beginners and makes a fantastic gift. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY working in the round basic decreasing yarn over GAUGE 14 sts and 17 rows per 4 inches in Lace Pattern on larger needles SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Finished Circumference: 12(13.5, 15, 16.5, 18) inches Size: Infant(Toddler, Child, Tween, Adult)

Supplies Needed

  • 90(100, 110, 120, 130) yards bulky weight yarn; OR double-stranded worsted weight yarn
  • Size 10(6 mm) and Size 11(8 mm) 16" circular needles and set of 5 DPNs, (if adjusting needle size to achieve gauge, take note that smaller and larger needles are 2 sizes apart), stitch marker

Kate's When I Grow Up line is for those of us who are not tots, featuring a modern classic style. She also does freelance work for a variety of publications. In her non-knitting life, Kate has just finished up a PhD in Political Science from the University of Florida. She lives with her family in South Carolina, which includes husband Ryan, Jesse, Charlie & Oliver (3 very handsome Tot Topper's models) and beloved dogs Cooper and Lou.
