The place-mat is knitted using same pattern basically as the coasters I did earlier. (The coaster pattern is a FREE pattern.) Knitting a rectangle, diagonally, requires increasing and decreasing on the same row for part of the knitting-- in order to shape the two different side at the same time. It is IMPORTANT TO DISTINGUISH which are ODD numbered rows and which are EVEN numbered rows as both sides are identical. Use a row counter or whatever works---a pencil and pad will do. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit, increase and decrease-- -purl stitch not required GAUGE 4-1/2 stitches = 1 inch, but gauge is not important to this project SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS measures approximately 12" by 16" SUGGESTED YARN 190 yards of Worsted weight PREFERRED BRAND/YARN 100% cotton yarn--PEACHES & CREAM COLORWAY self striping yarn

Supplies Needed

  • size 7 ndles, 2 skeins of cotton yarn-95 yds each skein, and a stitch marker
  • row counter and ruler for measuring

My favorite hobbies are --- knitting, playing Mah Jong,, reading, and travel. Knitting became a "passion" too many years ago to remember. I usually begin my day with knitting and end it the same way. I took the "long way" to learn the "ins and outs" of knitting, but once I got it, I got it! I remember realizing one day how important "gauge" was. What a revelation that was! Before, I had disregarded anything I did not understand and simply plowed on to the next project, etc. Needless to say, many of my first efforts were disappointing. Sometimes I got lucky, but what a waste of time and effort "knitting blind"!
