PATTERN DETAILS

I live in central Texas so we don't wear mittens and gloves much. However, fingerless mitts come in very handy on the occasional cold, windy, rainy, and yes, even snowy or icy day. These mitts are knit with World Village Fibers Peruvian Highland Wool which is very soft and warm. They are a quick and fun project and can easily be completed in a weekend for last minute gifts. As a bonus, I have included in this design a new stitch that I learned. It is called the Lateral Braid stitch, also known as the Vikkel Braid which is an Estonian technique. It is a challenging stitch but even an experienced beginner can master it after a couple of tries. I hope you enjoy knitting these mitts as much as I enjoyed designing them! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY You should already know how to knit and purl as well as be comfortable with learning a new technique. GAUGE Gauge can be tricky as each person's stitching is unique. Tension plays a big part. I knitted a 6" X 6" swatch in stockinette and measured the stitches within a 4" X 4" section. Using size 5 (3.75mm) needles, gauge was as follows; 28 sts and 32 rows = 4" SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS One size fits most. You may go up a needle size to make them slightly larger.

Recommended with this pattern

  • 50 grams (230 yards) World Village Fibers Peruvian Highland Wool or other fingering weight yarn.
  • Size 5 (3.75mm) circular knitting needles for knitting in the round (or size to obtain gauge.

My mom taught me to crochet and sew when I was a child. I learned to knit a few years ago. I have always enjoyed fiber arts as a hobby. Now I have started a new venture. I have an online store called World Village Fibers. My goal is to eventually open a shop in my hometown. Update: I'm very fortunate to have found a nice space for a small fiber arts shop/studio and plan to open in 2012!
