I make sure I snug the beads up against each other. I often draw a straight line on the bead backing to follow for at least one row. After that I just follow the first line of beads. Most of the pieces I have posted don't use cabs. I have trouble finding cabs that I can see before I purchase, so I found a lot of flat beads at a gem and jewelry show last Fall. I just bezel around them and they work great. I have used cabs for some pieces, but am cautious buying sight unseen.
