PATTERN DETAILS

Polymer clay is a delightful medium and you can do just about anything with it. I was a hobby sculptor for a while way-back-when but left it behind for wire and jewellery. But then my work into steampunk jewellery left me with a bunch of tiny watch parts....which I suddenly realized were perfect for jamming into clay! At first, I had a grand time building a nautilus and a 3D heart - meticulously sculpting details, adjusting the shape, picking out just the right metal bits to add. When I showed my husband he said, "That's great Gayle! But how many of those can you make in an hour?!" My answer was a feeble, "Um... one?" Sculptural work has its place but the hubby had a point - production work is what pays the bills. Which is how I came up with this technique - it's quick and has beautiful, unique results. Along with the step-by-step techniques for making these simple, stunning pieces, you'll also learn: How to work with mica powders How to create makeshift texture stamps How to use a pasta machine More than 80 precisely explained steps and nearly 200 close-up, sharp photos will ensure you are never left confused. The final product can be used as components such as pendants, earrings, cufflinks, brooches, buttons...even Christmas Tree ornaments! Edit March 1, 2013: It's my birthday and I'm having a sale!

Recommended with this pattern

  • Polymer clay such as Premo - black works best
  • A pasta/clay machine or manual clay roller
  • Various charms, stamps, and household objects for texturing

I'm a self-representing Cape Breton wire artist with a dozen years of experience writing clear instructions for online, adult learners. I love curriculum development almost as much as I love making jewellery! The two are combining beautifully with my online tutorials. Through all the art forms I've explored - painting, digital art, clay sculpting, web design, paper art, and calligraphy - my love of colour has guided me to new discoveries. Now, over a decade of self-teaching has produced my distinctive, spontaneous style of wire-sculpted art jewellery. My pieces weave non-tarnish wire around a wide range of stimulating materials. The warmth of semi-precious gemstones, the unlimited, variegated colours of firepolished glass, and the fascinating textures & history of beach glass all lend their own character to each one-of-a-kind creation. In my steampunk-inspired line, the patina of vintage, salvaged materials contrasts sharply with the bright & modern designs in the surrounding wire. I love to create and I love to teach and share with others. I hope I can help you find a new technique or pattern you'll love!
