This pattern was inspired by Maori designs. I originally worked a similar design with a series of others on a set of napkins to give to my sister in law from New Zealand. This Fish hook design is a little different with a spiral built into the curve and a woodgrain pattern to fill in the hook. I like it better. It incorporates multiple elements: Hei Matau (Fish hook) is a symbol of prosperity, fertility and safe travel over the sea. Koru (Spiral) is the symbol of new growth, new life, peace and tranquility. Included in the pattern are two sizes (5.2 inches x 2.7 inches and 4 inches x 2.1 inches) as well as mirror images of each size. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY backstitch stem stitch satin stitch

I am the craftiest daughter of a very crafty mother. She taught me a lot of crafty basics when I was young. In k-12, I used to get in trouble for drawing on my schoolwork. Later on I picked up a paintbrush and taught myself how to paint. For a brief period in college, I played with a computer based paper doll program (kisekae) and I got quite handy with a mouse. Today, I use my chronic doodling habit to develop cross stitch and embroidery patterns. I'm taking a break from designing patterns to work on a crazy quilt project. There are several new embroidery designs that I'm developing for this project. When it's done, I will work on publishing them as patterns here.
