This pattern was inspired by Maori designs. It incorporates multiple elements: The circle of life which includes the path of life ever ongoing, with no beginnings and no end. Koru (Spiral) is the symbol of new growth, new life, peace and tranquility. To work in the Pikorua (Twist), a powerful statement of loyalty, friendship & love, the outer circle of the pattern is meant to be stitched as a herringbone ladder stitch. This pattern includes some guidance on how to do the herringbone ladder stitch and provides links to some of my favorite tutorials. The pattern itself is included in four different sizes ranging from about 4.5 inches down to 2.5 inches (you would need to stitch the smallest size using only a strand or two of floss). BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY backstitch herringbone ladder stitch (some guidance provided in pattern) SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS multiple sizes included (see description)

I am the craftiest daughter of a very crafty mother. She taught me a lot of crafty basics when I was young. In k-12, I used to get in trouble for drawing on my schoolwork. Later on I picked up a paintbrush and taught myself how to paint. For a brief period in college, I played with a computer based paper doll program (kisekae) and I got quite handy with a mouse. Today, I use my chronic doodling habit to develop cross stitch and embroidery patterns. I'm taking a break from designing patterns to work on a crazy quilt project. There are several new embroidery designs that I'm developing for this project. When it's done, I will work on publishing them as patterns here.
