Sneakers

This was a piece I just completed for the March monthly challenge in Colored Pencil Magazine, they provided the photo reference, but you can interpret it anyway you see fit! Sadly, I haven’t done any coloured pencil work in the last year, so this was perfect timing, and I hope to win some much needed art supplies! The fabric in the laces & canvas of the sneakers was a real challenge, and I wanted to make them look well worn & well-travelled, and we’ll loved, as my sneakers are! I had a lot of fun doing those laces, and even tho they’re white, they are colourful, as white is never white! a lot of time went into this, but I loved every minute of it, giving sneakers a personality and life! I think this is my best coloured pencil piece to date, no airbrushed background on this piece either, all coloured pencil, background blended with some odourless mineral spirits, and a touch of brush & pencil to highlight a few white threads! all done with prismacolours, and a white luminance coloured pencil! 11”X15”/prismacolours/strathmore watercolour paper None of this would be possible, if I hadn’t done Cynthia’s course, and it’s definitely time for more coloured pencil work!

Q&A with kimette

Cynthia Knox asked:
Brilliant in every way, Kimette!!!! I absolutely love the feel of this, the nostalgic yet boho mood, the lovely watercolor way you have blended and swirled all those fabulous colors together including the "whites", and how you were able to achieve a well worn texture throughout the sneakers. You deserve to win, and I'm delighted that you posted here for all of us to see. :)
kimette answered:
Thank you so much Cynthia! I have a thing for sneakers, and the more worn, the more I love them. They’re one of my favourite subjects 😊 so I just wanted them to look “loved”. I keep hearing that “watercolour’ remark, I guess that is just my ‘style’! none of this would ever have happened had I not taken your great course, you are a wonderful instructor! thank you! I did not win or even get an honourable mention, but I do have a great piece to add to my sneaker ‘collection”.
shesogodd18998238 asked:
how do u make it so realist and the colour combinations go so well together i did a couple drawings but it didnt come out so unique like yours can u plz help me out
kimette answered:
Hi! sorry I just saw your question tonight. I don’t know how I can help you? I can only tell you to keep drawing, keep trying, you only improve by “doing”. I’ve been drawing since I was a child, but only in the last few years I’ve been drawing every day, and started working with coloured pencils a few years ago. I also paint with acrylics, so my answer would be just keep drawing! it won't happen overnight, just keep at it! start simple, a small subject, one object, a small drawing, and draw it everyday till you like how it looks. As for colour combinations, I just use the colours I like, that please my eyes, snd especially with colour pencil, work in layers, lots of light layers. This piece took me at least 40hrs! I’m not sure if that helped, if you give me more info, maybe I can be a bit more specific, if you’re doing this course just keep working at it, the biggest thing is patience!
kaleidimo7981496 asked:
Fabulous! These sneakers have such character and spirit......it is as if they tell a story of a journey.
kimette answered:
Thank you so much! I love your comments! that’s the best thing to read, I love bringing “life” to my drawings, and sneakers are a favourite subject! it didn’t win anything in the competition, but it won a lot of hearts & great comments, like yours😊. I wanted them to look well loved, and well-worn, if these shoes could talk ... thank you so much, for your great comments, and taking the time to express yourself. It makes me feel like I haven’t wasted my time, if even one other person has enjoyed my work!
