Project #1

Project Description

What type of piece is this? Drawing Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. I used graphite pencils HB, 2B and 2H on a 9 x 12 sketchbook. Wish I had longer to draw that day, but could only spend about an hour and a half sketching at the site (a golf course). The reference photo was taken a few days later (the leaves on the ground were not there the day I sketched!). I felt overwhelmed by all that I wanted to "get right" in the drawing. I'll take a deep breath, won't let it get me down, and will press on to the next lesson...

Q&A with DKWoodward

Patrick Connors asked:
PS- What was the size of your sketch book or tablet and what was the type of paper on which you worked?
DKWoodward answered:
Thanks so much for reviewing my Project #1. Question re: your suggestion of the mid tone of HB pencil to project the ground plane into the distance: Do you mean that the mid tone should be uniform across the space or graduating to lighter tones as it goes into the distance? To answer your P.S., the sketchbook is actually 11 x 14, Bienfang Studio Series, 50# paper, medium tooth, 100 pages. It's a leftover from long ago student days! Many thanks for your help in this class.
Patrick Connors asked:
Hello DKWoodward, You are welcome for the review. In regards to your question, "a midtone with an HB pencil for the lawn," you are quite right. It seems that a light midtone that gets less dark as it goes into the distance will help. Also, thank you for the additional information on the dimensions and type of the sketch pad. The Bienfang Studio series was/is a good all-purpose drawing surface. I look forward to the posting of your next drawing.

I've posted my project 2 (hammocks drawing) a few days ago and today a follow-up to it (project 3, bird's eye view), and am looking forward to your comments on both of these.
