Q&A with DJN13

Patrick Connors asked:
[criticism cont.] You made the grass strip between the road and sidewalk wider. Was there a compositional idea or concern for that? Had it been narrower it would have projected better into the distance. The tonal structure is uneven. In some areas, like the trees on the left, it is successful. Other areas, like the trees in the center distance it is not as successful and the space there becomes flat. You may want to consider making the foreground cast shadow darker, but not black or too dark. This is one way to give an threshold for the viewer to enter the space. The detail of the leaves in the upper right-hand corner is good. It may have helped if there was a little detail in the middle ground space. Not as apparent as the leaves but something that would move the eye slower back to the distance. Look forward to seeing your next drawing.
DJN13 answered:
I see your points. My road and sidewalk are about the same size, I made the grass too wide. I knew the center area looked off. Its too dark compared with rest. My attempt at middle ground did not work, which were the outlines of leaf shapes not colored it. It should have been a lot smaller. I do not know what you mean about making the foreground cast shadow darker...
