Colonial Cottage

Project Description

What type of piece is this? Collage/Mixed Media Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this piece. I printed the original photo onto A4 paper and transferred the image to watercolour paper. I traced the image with pen and ink and completed the sketch using watercolour pencils and a brush to wash in the colour. I removed my brother-in-law and husband from the finished piece along with the large tree in the background, as I felt that this was beyond my capability to draw at this stage. This gorgeous cottage sits on my sister's farm in country Victoria, Australia. Is the piece for sale? No What are you most proud of? I managed to keep a steady hand while using the pen and ink and felt that I captured the colours of the building as closely to the original as possible. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Take time when using the pen and ink and mix the colours on a separate piece of paper before transferring to the original.

Q&A with Helen Rattray

newsound12 asked:
I love how you simplified it :) I would just suggest not to be afraid to make a stronger contrast with shadowing its looks sort of one toned. Other than that it looks great
Helen Rattray answered:
Agreed. I might still darken up this end of the cottage to give a stronger contrast. Appreciate the comment! :)
