Rainbow Baby Afghan

Project Description

What was your source for this crocheting project? Online Photo or Website Name of website or photo Crocheted Rainbow Set - Blanket, Jacket and Booties Link to website or photo http://www.leisurearts.com/rainbow-crochet-pattern-afghan-jacket-and-bootie-set-epattern.html What are you most proud of? How beautiful it turned out. I got lots of compliments on it as I was working on it. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Make sure you have enough yarn. Using sport weight instead of baby weight required more yarn than was called for in the pattern. Sometimes it's hard to decipher what type of yarn to use for older patterns. There is now no such thing as "baby weight," so I bought baby sport, hoping that it was the same thing. It's not. I'm assuming baby weight would be a 2, whereas sport weight is a 3. I also would have liked to use a brighter purple because it doesn't stand out very well against the black background, but I couldn't find yarn in a brighter purple.

What you will need

  • Bernat sport-weight yarn + had to buy an extra skein of black that was Red Heart

Q&A with Purple Cat

patz in suffolk asked:
Absolutely lovely for a little boy! Or even for a big boy! I can crochet going round in squares and circles, but think this would be too complicated for me! Have you got a picture of the white and pastel one you made for your daughter, or is that long gone?
Purple Cat answered:
I do have one somewhere (the afghan I eventually gave away and still regret, but maybe if my daughter ever has a girl, I will make a new one). Some day I plan on scanning and uploading when I find the picture of the original.
Erica Crady asked:
I joined this website just to be able to post and tell you how much I like this blanket. LOVE the ripples. It just looks so different from most other rainbow things I've seen so far.
Purple Cat answered:
Thank you. I fell in love with it when I first saw the pattern.
Nancy Rivas asked:
Love this blanket. This is the reason I joined. Where can I find the pattern.
Purple Cat answered:
Here is the link to the pattern: http://www.leisurearts.com/rainbow-crochet-pattern-afghan-jacket-and-bootie-set-epattern.html Sorry the link above no longer works (I'm going to see if I can edit it to add the updated link).
VGonzales asked:
Purple Cat where can I get this pattern? Is it a free one?
Purple Cat answered:
Not free, but not terribly expensive either. Here's the link: http://www.leisurearts.com/rainbow-crochet-pattern-afghan-jacket-and-bootie-set-epattern.html

Have to tell you. I just spent HOURS trying to find this page after seeing a picture of this blanket in a search. Imagine my GREAT SURPRISE when I went to the link you posted only to find that I have had this pattern for 25 years. It's one of the first baby blankets I ever made! The difference in using the black instead of white yarn is AMAZING!! I still can't believe I put all by that time into looking for something I already have. Thank you for posting this and showing me, and others the HUGE difference changing one color can make. JUST BEAUTIFUL!!!
Purple Cat answered:
You're very welcome. I had a lot of fun doing it this way. I'm more fond of the bright colours with black than the pastels with white.
